In a chilling case exposing the dark underbelly of technology misuse, 19-year-old Rahul Bharti, a second-year B.Com student at DAV College, ended his life on Saturday evening after enduring relentless extortion involving AI-crafted deepfake obscenities targeting his family. The incident, which unfolded in the modest town of Baselwa Colony in Old Faridabad, has left the community reeling and sparked urgent calls for stricter cyber laws.
Rahul, the youngest son of driver Manoj Bharti and homemaker Meena Devi, hailed from a close-knit family originally rooted in Bihar's Siwan district but settled in Faridabad for over 50 years. With two married sisters and one unmarried, Rahul was the protective brother who bore the unimaginable weight of safeguarding their honour. What began as a routine day nearly two weeks ago spiralled into a nightmare when cybercriminals infiltrated his smartphone.
Police revealed that hackers seized control of Rahul's device, extracting personal snapshots to fuel their depraved scheme. Employing freely available generative AI tools, they fabricated hyper-realistic nude images and clips superimposing Rahul and his sisters' faces onto explicit content. These "deepfakes" flooded his WhatsApp inbox from an unknown number posing as "Sahil," who issued stark ultimatums: Pay Rs 20,000 immediately, or watch the material explode across social media, dooming the family's reputation forever.
The torment escalated with taunts, audio calls, and even a shared location pin luring Rahul to meet, according to police. In a final, heart-wrenching exchange, the extortionist mocked his despair, goading him toward self-harm and suggesting lethal poisons like sulphas tablets. Isolated by shame, Rahul confided in no one. He skipped meals, retreated to his room, and withdrew from loved ones – classic signs of a soul crumbling under pressure.
Around 7 p.m. on October 25, in the confines of his bedroom, Rahul ingested the toxic substance. His frantic family – alerted by his screams – rushed him to a nearby private hospital in Sector 19. Despite desperate medical efforts, he slipped away early Sunday morning. "He was our light, always shielding his sisters. How could anyone be so cruel?" wept Manoj, sifting through the damning chat logs on his son's phone.
Following Manoj's complaint at Old Faridabad Police Station, an FIR now stands against "Sahil," acquaintance Neeraj Bharti – Rahul's last caller – and unnamed accomplices under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for abetment to suicide, extortion, and cyber offences. Forensic teams are dissecting Rahul's device, tracing IP trails, and unraveling the AI forgery techniques. "This is a blatant abuse of cutting-edge tech for extortion. We've got solid digital footprints; arrests are imminent," claimed a police officer.
Police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav echoed the gravity: "Deepfakes are the new weapon in cybercriminals' arsenal. Victims, speak up – silence empowers predators." Investigators suspect insider betrayal, possibly via phishing or a compromised app, highlighting everyday digital vulnerabilities.
