Delhi: Husband Kills 27-yr-old SWAT Commando Over Dowry Demand; Here’s How it Unfolded

A 27-year-old Delhi Police SWAT commando, Kajal Chaudhary, succumbed to her injuries after allegedly being brutally assaulted by her husband, in a case that has brought the issue of dowry harassment and domestic violence back into sharp public focus. The incident occurred at the couple’s residence in the Dwarka Mor area of southwest Delhi, sending shockwaves through the police force and beyond.

According to police investigations, Kajal was assaulted on January 22 following an altercation with her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, a clerk with the Ministry of Defence. She reportedly sustained severe head injuries after being struck with a dumbbell and having her head slammed against a hard surface. At the time of the assault, Kajal was on a phone call with her brother, a Delhi Police constable, who later told investigators that he heard threats and sounds of violence during the call.
Kajal was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and remained under treatment for five days before she died on January 27. Some reports indicate that she was four months pregnant at the time of the assault. Police officials have confirmed that a post-mortem examination was conducted, and medical findings have been added to the case file.

The victim’s family has alleged that Kajal was subjected to sustained dowry harassment after her marriage in 2023. Kajal’s father, Rakesh, said tensions surfaced shortly after the marriage. He alleged that despite the family giving costly gifts such as a Bullet motorcycle, gold jewellery and cash, the demands continued. According to him, the in-laws repeatedly claimed that their son could have received a car had he married elsewhere. He further stated that Kajal later managed to arrange a car as well, yet the harassment persisted, leaving the family unable to communicate with her openly. The family spent nearly Rs.20 lakh on the marriage to meet the demands of their son-in-law.

Ankur Chaudhary was arrested shortly after the incident. The case was initially registered as attempted murder, but following Kajal’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder. Police officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that further action will be taken based on forensic evidence, witness statements, and call records.
The Chilling Phone Call

According to reports, the accused Ankit Chaudhury made a phone call just minutes before her death of Delhi Police SWAT commando Kajal.
Recounting the events of the night of January 22, Kajal’s brother Nikhil said he received a call from his brother-in-law, during which Ankur openly threatened to kill her. According to Nikhil, Ankur instructed him to keep the call on recording, claiming it would serve as police evidence, and brazenly asserted that the police would not be able to act against him, as reported by India Today.

The report further stated that, Nikhil received another call, barely five minutes later when he heard Kajal screaming in the background as she pleaded for help. Moments later, Ankur allegedly told him that she was dead and asked the family to come to the hospital. Deceased Kajal’s brother, Nikhil is a constable posted at Parliament Street Police Station, said the calls left him in shock and fear for his sister’s life.
By the time Kajal’s family reached the couple’s residence in Mohan Garden along with the police, she had already been taken to hospital in a critical condition. Delhi Police officials said the assault took place around 10 pm following a domestic dispute.

Investigators stated that Ankur allegedly slammed Kajal’s head against a door frame and then struck her with a dumbbell, causing severe head injuries. A forensic examination of the house later revealed bloodstains on the door frame and on the dumbbell believed to have been used in the attack.
