All Eyes on Maharashtra as Local Body Polls Set Stage for Political Showdown

Maharashtra’s political landscape is heating up as preparations intensify for the December 2 local body elections. A tight contest is expected between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), with many viewing the polls as a crucial test for the Mahayuti government after its sweeping victory in the 2024 Assembly elections, where it secured 235 of 288 seats.

This round of elections covers 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats, forming the first phase of the three-tier local governance structure mandated by the Supreme Court. Analysts say the results will serve as a barometer of the government’s performance over the past year while giving the opposition another chance to regain ground.

Campaigning has been extended until 10 p.m. on December 1. Voting will take place the next day, followed by counting on December 3. A total of 6,859 members and 288 council presidents will be elected. The election schedule was announced on November 4 by State Election Commissioner Dinesh T. Waghmare, who also implemented the Model Code of Conduct.

More than 1.07 crore voters are expected to participate across 13,355 polling stations statewide. Waghmare said electronic voting machines will be used at all locations, supported by over 66,000 personnel to ensure smooth and efficient polling.

The Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, will face the MVA alliance of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP), and the Congress.

In a significant early development, the BJP has already secured 100 councillor seats and three municipal president posts unopposed. State BJP chief Ravindra Chavan credited the victories to public trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
