‘Rijiju Interrupted Opposition Most’: Gaurav Gogoi’s Claim Sparks Response From Amit Shah

The Lok Sabha began discussions on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, on a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. The motion, moved by Congress MP Mohammed Jawed, triggered a heated debate, with Opposition members raising concerns about the functioning of the House.

During the debate, Mr Gogoi asked, “how the presiding member from the panel selected? There are several chairpersons on the panel. Who decided which person would preside over the House today? We strongly protest this. There are no records explaining why the current member from the panel is presiding. This is a violation of the Constitution,” he said.

Gogoi also pointed out that the post of Deputy Speaker has remained vacant for a long time, the country should know how the parliament is being run.”

During the debate, he also alleged that microphones were being “weaponised” in Parliament.

Gogoi said, “The Leader of the Opposition was stopped from speaking nearly 20 times during his speech in Parliament. In the future, when researchers study parliamentary records, statistics will show that Kiren Rijiju, as Parliamentary Affairs Minister, interrupted the Opposition the most.”

Responding to the remark, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “I agree that Kiren Rijiju ji, as Parliamentary Affairs Minister, has interrupted the most. But we have also never seen such an irresponsible Opposition.”

He further alleged that the Leader of the Opposition was interrupted while referring to an ongoing investigation by the United States Department of Justice, which he claimed involved the name of a prominent businessman and a senior minister in India. He said the Leader of the Opposition was not allowed to speak on the issue in Parliament.

He added that the Leader of the Opposition has the right to raise questions and asked which statement made by Rahul Gandhi had put pressure on the government.

Referring to Speaker Om Birla, Gogoi mentioned an incident in which the Speaker had reportedly advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to attend the House during the reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, citing “credible information” that some women MPs might surround the Prime Minister’s chair and create an unexpected situation. He called the incident “shameful”, calling it a breach of the Speaker’s neutrality.

MP Gogoi mentioned a report that the United States would allow India to continue purchasing Russian oil for 30 days due to the West Asia conflict. “Where did our dignity go? What happened to the claims of being a ‘Vishwaguru’?” he asked.

Concluding his speech, He said the resolution was not directed personally against Speaker Om Birla, but against the way the business of the House is being conducted.
