Nepal’s PM KP Sharma Oli Steps Down Amidst Escalating Unrest

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday amidst escalating nationwide protests that have left at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured. The violence, led largely by young demonstrators, erupted after the government imposed a ban on social media platforms, intensifying long-standing anger over corruption, unemployment and nepotism.

KP Sharma Oli had earlier urged dialogue to resolve the crisis, saying, “Violence is not the way. We need to find a peaceful way out through dialogue.” But his appeal was overshadowed by mounting unrest, as protesters defied curfews, torched the homes of senior ministers and stormed government buildings, including Parliament.

The turmoil began when access to Facebook, YouTube and X was abruptly suspended. Although the restrictions were lifted, the demonstrations swelled, with many accusing security forces of “murdering civilians” during the crackdown.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned after violent clashes in Kathmandu killed at least 19 and injured more than 300, including security personnel. His departure failed to placate protesters, who insisted that only Oli’s resignation would meet their demands. Despite attempts at conciliation, including restoring social media access and promising political talks, the government was unable to calm public anger.
