Man arrested by Kolkata Police STF for passing classified information to Pakistani agent

A suspected spy and an ISI agent has been arrested by Kolkata Police Special Task Force on Friday. Bhakt Banshi Jha, 36, has been arrested on chargers of passing classified information related to India’s defence sector and military installations to a Pakistani agent, a suspected intelligence operative.

“There is direct involvement of Jha. We have seized his phone along with several other incriminating documents. There are whatsapp chats in his phone that show how information was passed to a woman in Pakistan” said a senior police officer.

The intel about Jha was shared with Kolkata Police Special Task Force by Military Intelligence. Kolkata Police STF Bagan their work and had started following Jha for days before he was nabbed.

Bhakt Banshi Jha is originally a resident of Bihar and has worked with a courier company for several months in Delhi before he moved to Kolkata. He had been staying in Kolkata for the past 3 months, claim STF sources.

“He took pictures of important defence and vital installations in Delhi and sent them to the Pakistani agent. He had also shared exact coordinates with the handler, which proves he wasn’t simply fooling around,” said an officer.

Prima facie it is suspected that Jha could have been honey trapped after he came in contact with the Pakistani handler over social media. Investigation currently underway to understand how and what deepened their terms or relation and since when he had been working with the handler. Investigating officers fear, sensitive information might have been leaked already and this arrest could prove to be crucial in ensuring India’s both internal and external security. Jha has been booked under Official Secrets Act, section 3 and 9, along with charges of criminal conspiracy.
