India Expresses Concern, Urges Restraint as Nepal Unrest Claims 19 Lives

India on Tuesday voiced serious concern over the growing unrest in Nepal, which has claimed at least 19 lives and left hundreds injured, urging all parties to remain calm and seek peaceful resolution through dialogue.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed sorrow over the escalating situation and the tragic loss of life, particularly among the youth. “We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with families of the deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured,” the MEA said.

Reiterating India's position as a close and longstanding partner of Nepal, the ministry called for restraint from all sides. “As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue,” the statement added.

The MEA also acknowledged the reimposition of curfews in several cities, including Kathmandu, and advised Indian citizens in Nepal to stay vigilant and follow local advisories.

The Indian government’s comments come amidst escalating violence in Nepal, following the government’s decision to lift a ban on social media platforms after demonstrations erupted across the country, particularly in the capital, leading to violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

According to local media, at least 19 people were killed and over 300 injured during Monday’s crackdown, making it one of the deadliest civil unrest incidents in recent years.

Fresh protests continued into Tuesday morning, with demonstrators blocking roads in central Kathmandu and the Kalanki area. In response, the Kathmandu District Administration reimposed an indefinite curfew within the Ring Road zone, just hours after lifting the previous one.

Many of the demonstrators are students and young activists calling for the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, whom they accuse of corruption and authoritarian rule. In a televised address late Monday, Prime Minister Oli announced the decision to reopen social media platforms, which had been blocked the previous week. He attributed the violence to "infiltration by various vested interest groups" and said steps were being taken to restore order.

Oli also pledged the formation of an independent investigation panel, along with promises of financial compensation for families of the deceased and free medical care for the injured. Despite these measures, the protests show no sign of slowing. Many demonstrators have vowed to remain on the streets until the prime minister steps down.
