IMD Warns of Thunderstorms, Hailstorms Across West Bengal on March 20–21

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and possible hailstorms across several parts of West Bengal on March 20 and 21.

According to the weather office, multiple districts are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, lightning and thunder.

The IMD attributed the change in weather to favourable atmospheric conditions, including moisture incursion from adjoining regions and shifting wind patterns. These factors are expected to trigger thunderstorm activity across both south and north Bengal.

Some areas may also experience hailstorms, which could damage crops and disrupt normal life. Strong winds and lightning may lead to temporary power outages and traffic disruptions in certain locations.

The forecast comes shortly after parts of Kolkata and nearby areas experienced spells of Kalbaishakhi—the region’s characteristic pre-monsoon storms that typically bring sudden rain, strong winds and a drop in temperature.

Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, particularly during lightning strikes and strong winds. Farmers and people in vulnerable areas have been urged to take necessary precautions to minimise potential damage.

The IMD said it will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required.
