Gaza Peace Summit: Trump Hails Modi, Says India and Pakistan Can “Live Nicely Together”

US President Donald Trump once again lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing confidence that India and Pakistan could “live very nicely together.”

US President said, “India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top and he has done a fantastic job,” Trump said, referring to Modi. Turning to Shehbaz Sharif, who was standing behind him, Trump added, “I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together… right?” prompting a smile and nod from the Pakistani premier.

Trump and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also shared the spotlight at the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, as both leaders exchanged praise and spoke about peace in South Asia.

Moments later, Trump paused his speech and invited Sharif to speak. “Do you want to say something that you were telling me the other day?” he asked, handing over the microphone. Sharif, joined by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on stage, used the opportunity to praise Trump’s role in fostering global peace.

“I would say this is one of the greatest days in contemporary history because peace has been achieved after untiring efforts led by President Trump, who is genuinely a man of peace,” Sharif said. “He has relentlessly and untiringly worked throughout these months to make this world a place of peace and prosperity.”

Sharif also credited Trump with helping prevent a potential war between India and Pakistan. “He made outstanding and extraordinary contributions to stop the war between India and Pakistan,” he said, adding that Pakistan had even proposed Trump’s name for the Nobel Peace Prize for his “diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership.”

Trump, for his part, has repeatedly claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during a military escalation earlier this year a claim that India has consistently denied, asserting that the de-escalation was achieved through bilateral channels without foreign mediation.

In a recent interaction with reporters, Trump said, “With India and Pakistan, I told them, ‘If you guys want to fight a war and you have nuclear weapons, I’ll put tariffs on you both, 100%, 150%, even 200%.’ They said, ‘No, no, don’t do that.’ I had that thing settled in 24 hours.”

Despite Pakistan’s nomination, the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

However, Prime Minister Modi, though invited to the summit, did not attend. India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who participated on Modi’s behalf.
