The Bangladesh government has imposed an indefinite ban on the telecast, promotion, and coverage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the controversy over the removal of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad. The decision, announced through an official order on March 26, has come into effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
According to the government communication, all IPL-related broadcasts and promotional activities across Bangladesh have been suspended in the “public interest,” with the move approved by the appropriate authority. Officials said the step was taken after strong public reactions to Mustafizur’s mid-season exit from the tournament.
The order stems from the IPL’s decision to drop the Bangladeshi pacer from the Kolkata Knight Riders lineup. Bangladeshi authorities noted that the decision was conveyed as an instruction originating from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and was viewed as lacking any clear justification.
“There is no logical reason for this decision of the Indian Cricket Board and such a decision has distressed, shocked and angered the people of Bangladesh,” the government order stated, reflecting the intensity of public sentiment surrounding the issue.
In light of the backlash, the authorities said they were compelled to take action by halting IPL broadcasts nationwide. “A request has been made to stop the promotion/broadcast of all games and events of the Indian Premier League (IPL) until further orders,” the statement added.
