A first-year law student from a South Kolkata college has filed a formal complaint alleging that she was sexually assaulted by three individuals, including a former student leader, inside the college premises. The incident, which allegedly took place on the evening of June 25, has sparked fresh outrage in the city, coming close on the heels of the RG Kar Medical College episode. Monojit Mishra, a practicing lawyer at a lower court in Kolkata is the former student of the law college, identified as the prime accused in the case. He along with two others- both current students at the same law college have been arrested by Kolkata Police. They were produced before the court on Friday, sent to police custody for four days.
According to the FIR filed at Kasba Police Station on June 26, the student went to her college to submit an examination form. After completing the process, she was seated near the college union room when Monojit Mishra, the ex-student and former Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP), student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress, arrived on campus. He was allegedly distributing posts within the student body and appointed the complainant as the “Girl’s Secretary.”
Later that afternoon, Monojit reportedly approached the student with a packet of biscuits and asked her to accompany him into the union room, citing the need for a private discussion. Inside, he initially discussed student politics, but the conversation allegedly turned personal. The victim stated that Monojit expressed romantic interest and even proposed marriage. She declined, informing him that she was already in a relationship.
The FIR further states that later in the evening, around 6:30 PM, as students began to disperse, Monojit, along with Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee- the two other accused, called her back into the union room. Once inside, Monojit allegedly signalled the two others, who left the room and locked the door from outside.
At around 7:30 PM, the complainant claims Monojit forcibly took her near the washroom area and began sexually assaulting her. She resisted and reportedly suffered a panic attack, struggling to breathe. Monojit then called the other two accused back into the room. Although an inhaler was brought for her, her request to be taken to a hospital was denied.
When she attempted to leave, she found the main gate locked and the security guard allegedly refused to help. The victim says she pleaded to be released but was instead taken to the guard’s room, where Monojit allegedly raped her while the other two accused stood by.
She further alleges that Monojit threatened her with video recordings of the assault and warned that he would circulate them if she reported the incident. In the complaint, she also mentioned being physically injured and claimed that Mishra threatened to hit her with a hockey stick during the ordeal. The student managed to leave the college premises around 10:50 PM and immediately contacted her father. The next day, she lodged a complaint with the police.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). All three accused- Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukherjee (20), were arrested within 24 hours. According to police sources, their mobile phones have been seized, and forensic and medical examinations are underway.
Police have sought their custodial remand for further investigation, including the verification of digital evidence and crime scene reconstruction. “I want justice. I am a law student, and today I stand as a victim. I want the justice to be served as soon as possible and I pray before you, kindly take action against Monojit, Zaib and Pramit” the complainant concluded her statement before the police. The college authorities have yet to issue an official response. The case has raised serious questions about student safety and security on campus.
