After meeting Sonia Gandhi, Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar fuels buzz on power-sharing talks: ‘'Not here to soak in the sun’

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has once again sparked speculation over the state’s leadership dynamics, reiterating that “time will answer everything” following a meeting with senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting comes amid continued chatter about a possible power-sharing arrangement within the Karnataka Congress.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Shivakumar remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his discussions with the party leadership. “What I discussed inside and with whom, there is no need for me to disclose that. I’ve met the top leaders of my party and I have discussed whatever is necessary," Shivakumar said, adding, “If I have come here, then I will have to discuss everything. I’ve done that. I won’t speak about it in public." He emphasised that his visit to the capital was politically significant, stating, “I’ve not come here to soak in the sun, I’m here for political reasons and whatever is necessary, I’ve discussed that. Time will answer everything."

His remarks come at a time when speculation around a power-sharing formula between him and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has resurfaced. The alleged arrangement dates back to 2023, when the Congress formed the government in Karnataka, and has gained renewed attention as the administration approaches the midpoint of its five-year term.

Earlier this week, Shivakumar had urged party leaders to refrain from making public comments about internal leadership matters, warning that such statements could damage the party’s image. Referring to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s advice, he said, “Mallikarjun Kharge saheb has said that it is good if everyone keeps their mouths shut. We should follow that," and stressed the need for discipline within party ranks.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also expressed frustration over persistent questions about a potential leadership change. On Wednesday, he indicated that both he and Shivakumar would adhere to any decision taken by the Congress high command, underscoring that the party leadership would ultimately determine the course of action.

The leadership debate intensified last week after Siddaramaiah’s son and MLC Yathindra asserted that the chief minister would complete his full five-year term. That statement brought the issue of a possible transition back into the spotlight, especially in light of earlier reports suggesting a rotational or power-sharing understanding between the two leaders.

With the Congress government now past the halfway mark of its tenure, internal dynamics and leadership questions continue to draw attention. While Shivakumar has avoided confirming any details of his discussions in Delhi, his repeated assertion that “time will answer everything” has only added to the ongoing speculation surrounding Karnataka’s political future.
