Abhishek Banerjee Speaks to Hemant Soren Over Bengal Migrant Worker’s Death in Jharkhand

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday spoke to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, urging swift and decisive action against those responsible for the killing of a migrant worker from West Bengal’s Beldanga. According to reports, Soren assured Banerjee that Jharkhand Police had already launched an investigation and that those involved would be identified and arrested at the earliest.

The development comes amid mounting tension in Bengal’s Beldanga region following reports that a migrant labourer from the area was killed while working in Jharkhand. The body of the worker, identified as Alauddin Sheikh, was recovered on Friday morning from his rented accommodation, where he had been living for work.

Family members alleged that Alauddin was “brutally murdered”, claiming he was beaten to death and later hanged to make the killing appear like suicide. Local residents echoed the allegation, while the family further claimed that he was targeted because he was a migrant worker from Murshidabad.

News of the death triggered widespread unrest in Beldanga, with protests continuing for nearly five-and-a-half hours. Train services, buses and goods vehicles were disrupted as demonstrators blocked roads and rail lines, demanding justice for the deceased.

Appealing for calm, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged residents to maintain peace and assured the family of support. “What has happened is deeply unfortunate. We stand with the family and there will be justice,” she said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury met the bereaved family and said he would also take up the matter with the Jharkhand government. “Those responsible must be identified immediately and punished according to law,” he said.
