At least thirteen people, including four children and an Indian Army soldier, were killed in intense cross-border shelling as the Pakistan Army continued its unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC) for the 14th consecutive day.
“During the night of May 7–8, 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using Small Arms and Artillery Guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor areas in J\&K. Indian Army responded proportionately," said the Indian Army in a statement.
The soldier who lost his life has been identified as Dinesh Kumar Sharma from Haryana. “Every citizen of the country is proud of your martyrdom. This country will never forget your sacrifice. I salute this martyrdom," said Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
According to reports, the firing began during the night of 7–8 May and targeted forward villages and Indian positions in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. The intense artillery and mortar barrage by Pakistan was reportedly one of the heaviest seen in recent years and came just a day after India carried out a targeted counterterrorism operation known as Operation Sindoor.
In the early hours of 7 May, the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, a precision missile strike targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Believed to be operated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, the camps were hit with 24 guided missiles over 25 minutes, killing at least 70 terrorists and injuring 60. The Ministry of Defence said the strikes were “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” with no Pakistani military sites targeted.
The operation was a direct response to the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on civilians in Baisaran Valley, killing 26 people. On 24 April, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in reaction to the massacre. Within hours, Pakistan began a series of unprovoked ceasefire violations along the Line of Control.
