Iran has confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, following a large-scale joint military operation carried out by the United States and Israel. The unprecedented strikes, targeting strategic military and governmental facilities in Tehran, mark the most significant direct action against Iranian leadership in decades and signal a dramatic escalation in regional tensions.
Iran’s state broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), announced on Sunday: “The Supreme Leader of Iran Has Reached Martyrdom.” According to official reports, the 86-year-old leader was killed in his office during an early morning strike on his residential and administrative compound. State television asserted that his death at his workplace “showed that he consistently stood among the people and at the forefront of his responsibilities, confronting what officials call global arrogance.”
Israeli media outlets, including The Times of Israel, cited senior officials as confirming that Khamenei was killed in a targeted strike on Saturday. Channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been shown photographic evidence of the body after it was recovered from the compound in Tehran. Israeli authorities stated that the compound was completely destroyed during the operation.
US President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged the joint mission, describing it as a decisive measure aimed at neutralising what he characterised as a decades-long threat posed by Iran. In a social media statement, he said the death of the Iranian leader represented “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country.” He further declared that the United States had closely coordinated intelligence and operational planning with Israel, adding that “there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do.” Trump warned that “The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!”

The strikes reportedly also killed several senior Iranian officials, including Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammed Pakpour. Additional military commanders were confirmed dead by Israeli sources, while Iranian media reported casualties among members of Khamenei’s family.
