Shibu Soren, Former Jharkhand CM and JMM Founder, Dies Aged 81

Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand has died at the age of 81. The veteran leader passed away at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi following a prolonged illness.


His son, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, confirmed the news of his father's passing on social media platform X, stating, "Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. I lost everything today." 


He had been undergoing treatment since late June for a kidney related condition, with his health reportedly deteriorating over the past several days. 


Often referred to as Dishom Guru, meaning “great tribal leader”, by his supporters, Shibu Soren was a key figure in the formation of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a party rooted in the rights and welfare of tribal communities.


His political journey spanned more than four decades. Soren served as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister on three occasions and held ministerial positions at the Union level. In Parliament, he was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and was twice nominated to the Rajya Sabha, with his second term still ongoing at the time of his death.


Shibu Soren officially took charge of the JMM in 1987 and remained its undisputed leader for nearly four decades, guiding the party through numerous political shifts until he stepped down from active leadership in April 2025.
