Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan has clinched his first-ever National Film Award for Best Actor for his riveting performance in the 2023 blockbuster Jawan. The announcement, made during the 71st National Film Awards in Delhi, marks a significant milestone in Khan’s illustrious 33-year career. He shares the prestigious honour with Vikrant Massey, recognised for his compelling role in 12th Fail, in a rare tie that celebrates both veteran and emerging talent.
Directed by Atlee, Jawan captivated audiences with Khan’s dynamic dual portrayal of Azad, a vigilante jailer, and Vikram Rathore, his father, a former soldier. The film’s blend of high-octane action, emotional depth, and social commentary on issues like corruption and justice resonated widely, grossing over ₹1,100 crore globally. The jury, led by filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, praised Khan’s performance as a “masterclass in versatility,” highlighting his ability to balance intensity with vulnerability. This win adds to Khan’s legacy, which already includes the Padma Shri and France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Legion of Honour.
Vikrant Massey’s award for 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, recognises his heartfelt portrayal of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame poverty to succeed in the UPSC exam. The film, a critical and word-of-mouth success, earned widespread acclaim for its authenticity and Massey’s nuanced performance. The shared Best Actor honor underscores the diversity of Indian cinema, celebrating both a larger-than-life superstar and a rising star’s understated brilliance.
Fans erupted in joy on social media, with posts flooding X, calling the win “long overdue” for Khan, often hailed as the “King of Bollywood.” One user wrote, “SRK’s first National Award after 33 years is a triumph!” Another commented, “Both Shah Rukh and Vikrant shining- cinema at its finest.” The awards, announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, also honoured 12th Fail as Best Feature Film, while Rani Mukerji won Best Actress for Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
Khan’s 2023 comeback, with Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki, saw him draw over 7 crore viewers in India, cementing his global influence. Currently, he is shooting for King, set for release in 2026. This National Award not only celebrates Khan’s enduring charisma but also reaffirms his status as one of India’s finest actors.
