Pune Woman Booked for Filing False Rape Complaint Involving ‘Delivery Agent’

Weeks after her sensational allegation of being sexually assaulted by a man posing as a delivery agent sparked public outrage, a 22-year-old IT professional has been booked by the Pune Police for allegedly filing a false rape complaint.

The action comes less than a fortnight after Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar publicly stated that the woman had fabricated the story to mislead investigators.

According to police, a non-cognisable (NC) offence has been registered against the woman after an internal probe revealed that the alleged incident, reported on July 2, was entirely made up falsely.

"The investigation found inconsistencies in her account and no evidence to support her claims. Based on this, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita," a police official said.

Police are expected to summon the woman for questioning this week, during which her detailed statement will be recorded.

The false complaint had initially sparked panic, with 500 police ofiicers were deployed to find the delivery agent, as the woman had claimed she was attacked inside her residence by a man who gained entry while pretending to deliver a parcel. However, investigators later found CCTV footage and other evidence that contradicted her version of events.
