Sena vs Sena: Uddhav and Shinde Factions Face Off in Mumbai Civic Polls

For the first time since the split in the Shiv Sena, Mumbai’s civic elections will see a direct contest between the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde, turning the race for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) into one of the most politically charged battles in recent years.

Once united under a single party banner, leaders and cadres of the two factions now find themselves locked in a bitter struggle for political dominance in Mumbai. The confrontation is expected to be particularly intense in Marathi-dominated wards, where the loyalty of traditional Shiv Sena voters could determine the outcome. With Raj Thackeray extending support to Uddhav Thackeray, the contest has taken on added significance, sharpening the divide between the two camps.

Electoral arithmetic points to a closely fought race. The Shinde-led Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray faction are set to face each other directly in 69 wards, while 18 wards will witness contests between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Shinde-led Sena. In effect, the broader political alignment pits the Uddhav Thackeray–MNS combine against the Shinde Sena, which is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party. With alliance partners campaigning aggressively, the margins are expected to be narrow.

Marathi identity is likely to be a central theme of the campaign, particularly in traditional Sena strongholds. Issues such as the political and cultural rights of Marathi-speaking residents, concerns over demographic change, and anxieties about Mumbai’s future are expected to dominate political messaging. Alongside identity politics, core civic concerns, including infrastructure, redevelopment, governance and service delivery, are also expected to weigh heavily on voter choices.

The post-split realignment has significantly influenced candidate selection. A substantial number of MLAs and more than 50 former corporators crossed over to the Shinde camp and have largely been re-nominated. In contrast, the Uddhav Thackeray faction has attempted to balance loyalty with renewal by fielding a mix of long-standing supporters and new faces.

However, ticket distribution has triggered dissatisfaction on both sides. Alliance compulsions with the BJP in the Shinde camp and seat-sharing arrangements with the MNS on the Uddhav side have left several aspirants unhappy, raising the possibility that rebels could emerge as a decisive factor in closely contested wards.
