In a heart-pounding operation that gripped the bustling suburb of Powai, Mumbai Police stormed an acting studio on Thursday, freeing 17 terrified children held captive by a deranged man. The suspect, identified as Rohit Arya, was swiftly taken into custody after a standoff that lasted over an hour, leaving parents in tears of joy and relief.
The drama unfolded around 1:45 PM at RA Studio, a modest ground-floor space near the iconic L&T building, where aspiring young talents had gathered for what they believed was a routine web series audition. Unbeknownst to them, Arya – reportedly an employee at the studio and a small-time YouTuber – had orchestrated a chilling trap. Luring nearly 100 kids over the past 10 days with promises of stardom, he selectively barricaded 17 children (aged around 15), along with a senior citizen and another adult, inside a locked room.
Eyewitnesses described a scene straight out of a thriller: frantic children pressing their faces against the glass windows, waving desperately for help as anxious parents amassed outside. "I saw my son's small hands banging on the pane. It was heartbreaking," recounted one mother, her voice trembling. Chaos reigned as sirens wailed and a heavy police contingent, including senior officers and a Quick Response Team, sealed off the area.
Arya, appearing wildly agitated in a video he circulated online, proclaimed himself "Rohit Arya" and issued stark ultimatums. "Instead of suicide, I've planned this. I want simple moral and ethical conversations with certain people – no money, no terrorism," he ranted, clutching what police later confirmed was a fake air gun and some suspicious chemicals. He specifically demanded to confront former Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar over alleged departmental grievances, threatening to torch the studio and harm everyone inside if provoked. "Don't trigger me," he warned repeatedly.
Mumbai Police sprang into action. Trained negotiators, backed by mental health experts, engaged Arya in tense dialogues to de-escalate. When talks stalled, the fire brigade was summoned at 3 PM. Using hydraulic cutters, they sliced through the window grills, creating a breach. Elite officers then executed a daring forced entry via the bathroom, overpowering the suspect in seconds and ushering the hostages to safety – all unharmed, though visibly shaken.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary addressed the throng: "All children are safe and reunited with their families. Arya is in custody; we're probing his mental state and full motives." DCP Datta Kishan Nalawade added, "Our teams acted swiftly – no lives lost, mission accomplished." Powai Senior Inspector Jeevan Sonawane noted Arya's apparent mental instability, hinting at deeper issues.
