20-year-old college student from Kolkata's Haridevpur area on Saturday has accused two acquaintances of drugging and gang-raping her during what was supposed to be a celebratory birthday gathering.
The alleged assault occurred on Friday night (September 5, 2025), in the Regent Park locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Regent Park Police Station in South Kolkata, near Tollygunj. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are currently absconding, as the city grapples with yet another case of alleged sexual assault, since the Kasba Law College incident incident from July this year when a first year student was allegedly gang-raped by three including one ex-student.
According to the victim's complaint filed with the local police, she was picked up on a bike by the man identified as Chandan Malik, she knew him from the neighbourhood for couple of months. Chandan Malik, 25, brought her to the rented flat of Debangsu Biswas, 24 in Regent Park area for a low-key birthday party of Biswas. Police reports indicate, as informed in the complaint, that upon arriving at the location, the victim was offered a spiked drink, which caused her to lose consciousness shortly after. She alleges that the two men then took turns assaulting her sexually while she was incapacitated, holding her captive in the flat for several hours before she managed to escape around 10.30 am on Saturday morning.
The victim, a second-year college student pursuing a degree in commerce at a local institution, is also working at the local store. She later informed her parents and following that a police complaint was registered. Both Chandan and Devangsu @ Deep are absconding. Malik is also member of a local Durga Puja committee in the neighbourhood, allegedly used his clout to befriend the surviver.
Authorities suspect they may have fled to neighbouring districts or states, prompting alerts to be issued at key transportation hubs like Howrah Railway Station and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. "We are treating this case with utmost priority and have formed a special team to apprehend the absconding accused," said a senior officer from the Kolkata Police, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Raids are being conducted at possible hideouts, and we urge the public to come forward with any information."
