Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, introduced a new national security initiative named 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra’, which aims to safeguard India’s critical infrastructure through homegrown technological solutions over the next ten years.
Emphasising the importance of national security, Prime Minister Modi declared that the mission would be grounded in research and entirely built using Indian technology. “Every citizen must feel protected,” he said. “This mission will be research-based and developed entirely with indigenous technology,” he added, underlining the importance of self-reliance in strategic defence innovation.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra is expected to incorporate a comprehensive, multi-layered security framework. This will include advanced surveillance systems, robust cyber protection measures, and physical infrastructure safeguards, all tailored to address India’s evolving threat landscape.
The initiative comes in response to rising global concerns over cyber warfare, hybrid threats, and the sabotage of strategic assets. The Prime Minister noted the need for a proactive security architecture, citing historical vulnerabilities. “We cannot afford to be reactive. We must anticipate and prepare,” he stated, referencing the 2008 Mumbai attacks as a turning point in India’s approach to internal and external threats.
Drawing from Indian mythology, PM Modi invoked the story of Lord Krishna from the Mahabharata. He recalled the divine moment when Krishna obscured the sun to enable Arjun to defeat Jayadrath, a symbolic act that altered the course of battle. “We are taking inspiration from Lord Krishna, who once barred sunlight from reaching Earth. That divine intervention changed the course of battle,” he said. “Today, we must similarly shield our vital institutions from emerging threats," added the Prime Minister.
