Air India Plane Skids Off Runway At Mumbai Airport Amid Heavy Rain, Passengers Safe

An Air India flight from Kochi skidded off the runway while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday morning amid heavy rainfall. Fortunately, all passengers and crew members on board escaped unharmed.

The incident occurred at 9:27 AM when flight AI2744, operating on the Kochi–Mumbai route, experienced a runway excursion shortly after touchdown due to wet runway conditions. Despite the deviation, the aircraft managed to taxi safely to the gate. All passengers disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft has since been grounded for thorough safety checks.

In an official statement, an Air India spokesperson said, “Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

CSMIA authorities confirmed the incident and noted that emergency protocols were immediately activated. “An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. All passengers and crew are safe,” a CSMIA spokesperson said.

Minor damage was reported to the airport’s primary runway (09/27). As a precaution and to maintain operations, the secondary runway (14/32) was activated shortly after the incident.

“At CSMIA, safety always remains our highest priority,” the airport spokesperson added.​
