Man Arrested for Defrauding Over 700 Women Using Fake Dating Profiles

A 23-year-old man, Tushar Singh Bisht, was arrested on Friday from East Delhi's Shakarpur area for allegedly duping over 700 women by posing as a US-based model on dating platforms.

Bisht, a resident of Delhi, worked as a recruiter at a private company in Noida during the day but led a double life by night, posing as a model on a "soul-searching trip to India" to trap his victims. His elaborate scam combined fake profiles, stolen photographs, and fabricated stories to gain the trust of women aged 18 to 30.

Sophisticated Modus Operandi

Using a virtual international mobile number obtained through an app, Bisht created fake profiles on platforms like Bumble and Snapchat. His fraudulent identity included photos and details stolen from a Brazilian model. After befriending his targets, he convinced them to share personal details, including intimate photos and videos.

Once he gained access to private content, Bisht began blackmailing his victims. According to police, he demanded money and threatened to leak or sell the content online if his demands were not met.

Victim Comes Forward

The scheme unraveled when a second-year Delhi University student filed a complaint at the West Delhi Cyber Police Station on December 13, 2024. The complainant revealed she had connected with Bisht on Bumble earlier this year. After shifting their conversations to WhatsApp and Snapchat, she shared private content, which he later used to extort money.

Initially, the student paid a small amount, but his continuous demands led her to report the matter to the authorities.

Police Investigation

A team led by ACP Arvind Yadav tracked Bisht's activities using technical surveillance and intelligence inputs. A raid in Shakarpur resulted in his arrest and the recovery of crucial evidence.

Police seized Bisht’s mobile phone, which contained incriminating data, including private conversations with over 60 women. Additionally, they recovered a virtual international number, 13 credit cards from various banks, and evidence of transactions linked to his extortion activities.

Two bank accounts tied to Bisht were identified—one showing payments from victims, while the other remains under investigation.

Background and Motive

Bisht, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration (BBA), had been working as a technical recruiter for the past three years. Despite a stable job, he turned to cybercrime driven by greed and personal motives.

Coming from a middle-class family, Bisht’s father works as a driver, his mother is a homemaker, and his sister is employed in Gurugram. His descent into cybercrime highlights the misuse of technology for personal gain and the devastating consequences for his victims.

The investigation is ongoing, with police urging more victims to come forward.
