“Hopes of a Billion Hearts…”: India’s Shubhanshu Shukla Heads to Space with Axiom-4 Crew

India has achieved a landmark moment in space exploration as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a pilot from the Indian Air Force, embarks on a historic journey beyond Earth aboard the Axiom-4 mission. Launched aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft atop a Falcon 9 rocket, the mission lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the same iconic launchpad that sent Neil Armstrong to the Moon on Apollo 11 in 1969.

Group Captain Shukla now becomes only the second Indian to travel to space, following in the footsteps of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, who flew as part of a Soviet mission in 1984 over four decades ago.

The mission had faced multiple delays due to adverse weather and technical issues, with NASA finally confirming 25 June as the launch date, marking the sixth such announcement.

Shukla, who has undergone over a month of quarantine to ensure optimal health for the flight, is joined by three other astronauts: mission commander and veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson from the United States, specialist Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and specialist Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

The four-member crew is now en route to the International Space Station (ISS), where they are scheduled to dock around 4:30 p.m. IST tomorrow after a roughly 28-hour orbital journey.

During the two-week mission, the astronauts will conduct 60 scientific experiments, including seven designed by Indian researchers. The mission holds immense significance for India’s scientific community and space ambitions.

Speaking ahead of his departure, Group Captain Shukla expressed the emotional weight of his journey, “I carry with me not just instruments and equipment, but the hopes and dreams of a billion hearts.” Just hours before liftoff, in a heartfelt message to his family, he added, “Just wait for me, I’m coming.”
